Shares of some top gold companies were up at the close of trading:
Barrick Gold rose $2.66 or 7.3 percent, to $39.17.
Gold Fields rose $1.19 or 9.3 percent, to $14.01.
Goldcorp rose $2.96 or 8.0 percent, to $40.12.
Newmont Mining rose $2.91 or 6.7 percent, to $46.48.
